Mainly because, after a couple of changes, I've landed at a place where I'm no longer "a lady on the phone"... or not usually!

However, I am attached to this blog and have often promised to post here my work-related posts from elsewhere, but never got down to translating them all into English!

So, as I feel I could explain little things here that have nothing to do with my main blogs, I've decided to translate quickly (with Google's help and then a final checkup) some of the posts I'd thought of passing onto here, and from there on I'll update here now and then, with those little things like the doctor who prefers phoning me and having little chat to explain his problems so that I pass them onto my boss or the Project Manager, although he has been told dozens of times I can't solve his problems but the PM might be able to!

But I'll be back on this and much more. Soon. Ish.
Bosses were surprised to see my waltz in the next morning, with a bagful of gadgets and ideas for our stand in Madrid in November... which we have been discussing at three meetings so far, and have another meeting on Monday to present my ideas.

The corniest bit was the titles the speeches and congress workshops had. Or the pink, plastic bracelet one stand gave me -Yuck!Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1116523896797650552005-05-19T19:19:00.000+02:002005-05-19T19:31:36.803+02:00First week balanceI started last Friday, so we can consider I've worked at my new office for a week now. The doubt comes from the long week-end, as Monday was a bank holiday.

The office itself is great -my part. It's nice, well designed, daylight streaming in through the window/wall... and good, comfortable, efficient furniture. Which in Spain is not that easy to find in an office!

The people at the firm are really helpful and nice. Silence is the thing that most shocks me -again, in Spain...- and how the team is so young, but am realizing how and why. Am really glad to start working here now, as they are just starting to implement new procedures and quality control processes for virtually everything, from documents to contacts' information... which is really needed. No way to find out where the Canon card or warranty was for this fax machine that seems to be almost new but sticks all the time -hey, if it's new, get it seen to!

The location is really convenient to me, and though there shall be no summer hours -many Spanish companies work only from 8 to 15 in August, or July/August- there are other things that compensate.

Finally, I have noticed how many of my suggestions as to implementing this system rather than that one, or how to optimize certain procedures, have been taken with surprised delight. They were looking for someone who'd get involved with the re-structuring of the company's systems, and they found Me, a suggest-aholic, so they are beaming every time I say 'Actually...'

So? I am really glad I took this job, and didn't jump to one of the other two offers I got the first day at this company.Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1115835321250070342005-05-11T20:12:00.000+02:002005-05-11T20:15:21.256+02:00The Lady Has Found A Job...So I shall be back at work, and less likely to post. Even less, I know. What shall happen in the near future, probably, is what I had originally thought of: posting here a whatever I write concerning work at my other blogs.

Have a toast on The Lady!Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1115311618397354812005-05-05T18:39:00.000+02:002010-08-18T13:17:47.780+02:00And suddenly...After yawning away my cvs, I suddenly have four interviews in three days, plus another two ahead of me next week, plus contacts from other companies who shall get in touch soon to coordinate meetings in Bcn.

Have literally been late to an interview because I was contacted on the phone just as I was walking into the underground TWICE this week. Now, let's see if I finally get one of these jobs. Some have interesting salaries or bonuses, some other are interesting because they involve art galleries, publishers... but pay less. I should start thinking of sticking to whatever comes first, if they don't make their minds up soon.

By the way, the Cuban project starts to have a bit more consistency. And if I did get the job at a local gallery, then I could wrap it up better when I got down to free-lancing for the Cuban artists project. Now that would make it a third positive point towards this offer, as I had already considered the fact of working with art and the fact of being close to my son's school, in my favourite area in Barcelona. The negative sides are the lower salary, compared to other processes I am in, and the working hours -one Saturday a month, I'd have to work all day long.Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1114197389874107342005-04-22T21:14:00.000+02:002010-08-18T13:17:47.780+02:00Quiet weekOnly had one interview, this week. They catch you off-guard.

This time I was at Eva's place, with her asking me all the time 'Who is it? Who is it? Who are you talking to?'. It was the only job I'd applied for that was not in Barcelona City, but was really interesting, import/export. The guy from the HR asked me what I was looking for, I said I was looking for a job in Barcelona. SO, instead of giving me an appointmente for a second interview, he said he'd say something in three days aprox. Sounds like a no-no, doesn't it? AM not deleted from the process yet, though.Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1113219222366546202005-04-11T12:51:00.000+02:002005-04-11T14:10:30.746+02:00Officially a Secretary?Last week I received this big parcel. Wasn't expecting anything, so I opened it, quite puzzled. It was from Secretaria Plus. It was, basically, an updated guide of hotels, restaurants and other interesting services around Spain -A Must For The Perfect Secretary- and a load of ads for office products, dental clinics, spas, and The Event. I am not going to the Secretarial Congress or whatever they've decided to name it, as I can think of better ways to spend the 399 euro it costs to attend to the three days -550 if you buy it at the last moment!- yet I guess I'll attend the exhibition. What I am still thinking over is whether it is worth to subscribe as a member of the Profesional Secretary Council -80 euro per year, initial fee of 100 euro deducted till end of April.Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1112796483054270582005-04-06T15:52:00.000+02:002010-08-18T13:17:47.781+02:00This, I guess, shouldn't be in their policyYesterday afternoon I received a phonecall from a certain HR company. They were phoning me, allegedly, about a job offer I'd applied for almost a month ago, on 09.03.05. Not a high-fly job, yet really well paid if you consider the effort/nerves/responsabilities/wage ratio. Plus, in the centre of Bcn, so I'd be close to my son's school and friends' places for lunch/evening meetings.

Let's say it, it was as a receptionist for a cultural institute, with a high level in Catalan, Spanish and English. But better paid than both my previous jobs -Marketing & Purchase Assistant and Head of Export dept.! Hey, no problem, I shall pick up the phone and attend your visitors with a <strike>hell of a </strike> great, bright smile for that wage!

Where's the catch to it? I didn't know, so I wanted to find out. Sometimes they ask for a receptionist, but you end up doing secretarial work too -no problem in that case. Sometimes it's more a case of a typo -thanks, but no thanks, in that case.

So, today I went to the HR office for the interview, and the girl in charge of recruitments said that the job wasn't worth applying for now, the conditions had been changed and the salary, the only thing she guessed had attracted me to a lower kind of job*, was almost sliced down to half! Nonetheless, she wanted to see me to have me in her databank, as my experience and profile was fit for a few positions they'd been trying to cover some while ago, so now they guess they may have a job for me soon(ish). Would I be interested in Export, Import, Marketing [...]?

I must say, the salaries in Spain have receded so badly it is not the first time someone behind the desk has warned me about a change in wage, terms and conditions or has commented on how little the companies are expecting to pay for a well trained and experienced professional. They say some times they feel bad even for publishing certain ads, yet people still do reply to them!

*So she called it o_ÔOkokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1112180655888160552005-03-30T12:50:00.000+02:002010-08-18T13:17:47.782+02:00Making some progressI am now waiting for my third interview for a certain job that I consider quite well paid, with some extras to it, and where I can see myself working, though it would mean acting out a different version of myself -almost as when working three months for Ensenyament- so I can adjust to a Corporate Assistant Profile.

But... I have also been contacted several times via e-mail and phone for a more interesting project, at least as far as I can see right now, but with a much minor expectation salarywise and in terms of extras, security, and so on. This is, I have been contacted to take part in the setting up of a certain art gallery, first virtual and later on real, in Barcelona. The major problem is I have not been able to actually see anything related to this project, so I can not guess how far it is in the future nor how serious it shall be. It is more attractive to me, yet it may even vanish in thin air after a while, or just never happen. I have read information on previous projects taken up by this person, but I haven't found anything recent and have not received his promised files yet. Also... I was quite taken towards it in the beguinning, so when I was asked to name my expected salary I went too low for an initial negotiation, reckoning it is a new project to start off virtually from scratch, and I thought the moment I sent my reply I should have asked for something a bit higher.

And, right now, I have been contacted via telephone regarding a job I applied for, had a terrible line on the phone, and had to repeat my words over and over, and ask my interviewer to repeat what he said... and he ended by hanging up on me! I ran out to a better area for my mobile, returned his phone call, explained what happened... and failed to get a chance to talk to him again!

__

Update: Seems like I've lost the well-paid job.Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1111670862729119702005-03-24T14:24:00.000+01:002005-03-24T14:30:51.750+01:00DisconnectingI am spending Easter with my family, and the cybers around here are really bad: most have weird timetables -closing from 1 to 5, for instance!- and are three times as expensive as the ones in Barcelona. Plus, the cybers near my parents' have terrible connections! they are slower than the regular home connections at my friends' place!

I have found ONE place, more or less ok, the best one around, though it looks odd!

Just have to hope I get a pc when I come, as it is not very big: it's a few pcs with a coin slot on them, at the reception to a hostel. The interview started off in Spanish, then we went on talking in English, then French :*) -which fortunately I had mentioned in my CV I can use, but am not fluent- and then in Catalan, then back to Spanish and Catalan again!!!

Once the interview was over, the man told me he'd send on my cv -the English version I sent- plus the introductory letter I'd sent initially, along with my Spanish standard Infojobs cv. He mentioned a couple of times my presentation/introductory letter was quite good, he'd liked it :DDD

So, am onto the third level of this selection progress... keep your fingers crossed!

P.S.: Once this interview was over, I had to sit a psicotest and then write a bit on why I was interested in this job, for their graphological test! My habit is writing in CAPITALS, so I wrote it like that, as otherwise I'd be forcing it and it wouldn't be my natural me. Had a few days off going to the doctor with my son and other little things I'd scheduled for these first free mornings, and am now down to business.

Yesterday I had two interviews:

One was for a temp job, 9 months at a food multinational famous in Spain for its crisps. The position wasn't specially appealing, but it had a decent wage and the working hours were perfect. Plus, there is a high chance to get a proper job as it'd be helping at the Human Resource dept.

The other one, in the afternoon, was for an Export Assistant at a Chemichal company. Better wage, better contract, and not a temp. But the interview didn't seem to go as well as the other one. I somehow felt uneasy with the interviewer, and though I'm used to job interviews and to go through various screening rounds, this time I was getting nervious by the end of the interview -she was jotting down a load of notes about our conversation, and sometimes seemed unsatisfied.

By the way: It was a good chance for my son to feel a little adult: he waited for me at the Mac Donalds -yes, don't say a word- nearby, I walked him there and gave him the money to order a kids menu on his own and wait till I'm over the interview. He loved the experience!Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1109950449477282952005-03-04T16:14:00.000+01:002005-03-04T16:35:42.380+01:00Embarasssing negotiationThough the course is almost finished, there are still a few sessions left... and there shall still be some surprises!!!

This morning, after taking a test to value our negotiating skills and styles, and after quite a few role-plays during the course, the teacher asked for two voluntaries to act out a hard negotiation. As usual, no-one offeres but me and A., the Argentinian guy, and so he directly looked me in the eye, motioend 'Let's team up on this one' and I stood up saying out loud 'Yes, well, seeing how little is left of the course...' I really do like the exercises this teacher proposes, and have always been one of the first for role-playing and other situations where *embarassement* may be expected. Plus, I'm one of the 3 people who interact and give any feedback at all, and when any of us three is ill or away for some reason, the classes D-R-A-G on for five and a half hours teacher-only sessions.

Anyway, as soon as she made me walk out to the passage and started giving me the instructions for my role, I KNEW I'd be into trouble. The Argentinian guy is a really strong negotiator, and he's quite inflexible -in fact, he's working on that, as he'd been in charge of Purchases for a huge chain of supermarkets and became used to being in the dominant position, whileas now he's moved to Spain and may end up working in a small company with different policy.

My role: At the moment of signing a contract between both companies (not going into all the details), I realise I had left at the office some vital documents, and can not get them now nor sign later on, as we're at a lawyer's and the earliest new appointment would be in two days. I'd really need to continue with the agreed procedures even if we haven't signed the contract officially with the lawyer's stamp, as I'm counting already on what should be delivered next week.

I walked back into the classroom knowing he would be dominant, specially as I'm on the wrong side, and tried to work on it as collaboratively as possible, but he did, indeed, turn out to be abusive.

The embarassing bit: HE MANAGED TO MAKE ME LOSE MY COOL TOO, WICH HAD NEVER HAPPENED IN THE WHOLE COURSE SINCE NOVEMBER, NOR IN REAL NEGOTIATIONS!!! The whole class, teacher included, where shocked and commenting how I had ended being as abusive as him, though controling my non-verbal language -serene bodylanguage, but implying inefficiency and lack of know-how in my opponent.

Teacher said I should have been taped, as those who weren't there this morning won't believe the session.

Was supposed to meet my ex at lunchtime, and I told him about this on the phone. He laughed and pulled my leg during the whole time we were together!!! He couldn't believe it, after living together for two years and never, ever seeing me abuse anyone or loose my manners!!!

Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1109689163297703502005-03-01T15:56:00.000+01:002005-03-01T19:11:28.976+01:00Negotiation classesAfter a 5-hour session on Japanese Culture and another 2 hours on Japanese Meeting Policies, you can't blame me at posting this!

Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1109529361045778962005-02-27T19:24:00.001+01:002010-08-18T13:17:47.783+02:00China callingPeople around me are joking all the time about China. The New Market is after you, look! Chinese Noodles for dinner! and blahblahblah.

Reason? My friend JL (not J-Lo!) is planning to move to China to invest in or start a new business. He's more on the commercial side than practical minded, so he asked me to help him, as a P.A.-friendly hand. Got tons of info, went to institutions with him to find out about paperwork, talked his plans over and over with him, went to Speeches on Opportunities in China, read -partly, ok- two books on Chinese Investments and Economics. He was offering me a small pay while I finished my course, plus the chance to work for him from Bcn once it all started turning.

Now am really down in cash, and have received no further money nor tasks to do, and I spoke to him while at the Chinese Culture Expo -12 hours of music, speeches, kanji, fung fu, you name it- and said I really needed to get some extra cash in, would jump for a job as soon as I finished my course... and he simply said he'd stopped his project temporarily. It is quite more complicated than he'd originally thought. Ha- I'm glad he realized, as a friend, but am also really pissed off he hadn't warned me.

He had originally told me not to look for a job for the moment, as I'd have to cooperate with him almost full-time by March! -I know him, so I hadn't believed much of this, but hey, some extra income I was expecting!Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1109359727529742922005-02-25T20:22:00.000+01:002010-08-18T13:17:47.784+02:00The worst interview since...Had this interview yesterday, for an interesting job: Marketing Assistant -plus sales dept. and purchasing dept. assistant, according to the description- for some company who investigates in Biology.

I am not a biologist, nor have any knowledge, but have been in touch with teams investigating viruses and have translated and co-written some essays and articles. In short, am interested in this field.

Phoned J., my closest biologist, to ask him if he knew who the company could be -no name given, but a general reference to its location- and end up with a briefing on bio-words and other jargon I should use to impress ;)

By the time I get to the interview, my hopes high as I'd got a really quick reply to my application, I was almost visualizing how to deal with the bio-philosophical connections during our talk, but...

BUT!

The person who interviewed me was totally useless!!! When I told her I happened to be in touch with biology, as I'd collaborated with a team in quite a few publications, she got nervious and started shouting at me WELL, THEY HAVEN'T ASKED FOR ANY OF THAT ANYWAY, IT WOULD BE ASKING TOO MUCH THAT THE SECRETARY SHOULD ALSO BE A BIOLOGIST!!!!

I kept a low profile after that, not asking any further questions to Miss <strike>Dumface</strike> <strike> Fishmouth</strike> Insight, when she asked if I had any further question.

The only guess is the psicologist was off sick, and some kid from the office was sent to check out a couple of us, and screen for the next round. Sigh!

Good job I hadn't brought with me the documentation on conferences and journals I'd been involved with!!!Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11057448.post-1109268731358208662005-02-24T19:05:00.000+01:002010-08-18T13:17:47.784+02:00This is (not) the beguinning...I've been blogging for over a year, and have -as most of us- switched subjects, styles, created sister/blogs.... These last few months I've been considering a new blog, work-based but not technical -so many around. A sort of Dilbert wannabe? Maybe.

Not quite.

In any case, I had planned to blog my jobhunting -too late to do it properly, as I've ben out of work for eight months now- and the course I'm attending, and had also considered re-posting my job-related stories blogged elsewhere.

What do I do for a living? Not a comp tech, as most bloggers who blog their day-to-day work. Just a P.A. -personal assistant- a.k.a. secretary, a.k.a. sales assistant, marketing assistant, export assisstant...
This is, then, THE LADY ON THE PHONE.Okokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02552735096971686817noreply@blogger.com0
